The incident happened in South Street, outside Rapscallions Club, between 3am and 4am on Wednesday, October 1, after the victim, an 18-year-old man, had been on a night out, a spokesperson for Sussex Police added.

A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: “He was with a friend and they were approached by two men, including a suspect who acted aggressively.

“The victim was pushed, headbutted and further assaulted, leaving him with injuries requiring treatment in hospital.

“Police are treating the incident as a homophobic hate crime.

“The victim reported that the suspect was of a large build with dark brown hair and clothing, and may have said he was from North Wales.

“Officers have issued a CCTV image of a man they wish to speak with in connection with the incident.”

District Commander Chief Inspector Kay Hutchings said: “This was an unprovoked assault in Chichester city centre which left the victim shaken and requiring hospital treatment.

"We take reports of hate crime seriously. Hate has no place in our communities. We understand that reporting it can sometime be difficult, but we continue to encourage anyone impacted by hate crimes to report them to Sussex Police.

“We are continuing to work with partner agencies in Chichester to further support victims of crime.”

Anyone who recognises the man or has information about the incident is asked to contact Sussex Police online, quoting serial number 1307 of 01/10.
