Cyclist killed in hit and run

A Battle woman, aged 60, has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and causing death by dangerous driving after a cyclist was killed on the A21 Robertsbridge by-pass.

Paul Novak, 50, from West Hill Road, St Leonards, died when a red Fiat Punto collided with his bike at 4.30pm on Monday between Northbridge Roundabout and George Hill, Robertsbridge.

Mr Novak and the car were both travelling south when the collision occurred.

The car failed to stop and was later located by police, five miles away at Marley Lane, Battle.

Paul Novak was described by his family as a quiet private man who had a passion for playing chess and cycling. They say he spent a lot of time researching a wide range of other interests and was extremely knowledgeable.

A police spokesman said: “His family are deeply shocked and saddened by their sudden loss.”

The road was closed for six hours on Monday while the incident was dealt with.

The 60-year-old woman has been bailed to attend Hastings police station on February 2, 2014, while enquiries continue.

Sergeant Stewart Goodwin said: “I am keen to speak to anyone who saw the collision happen or the cyclist or red Punto in the moments beforehand. I would also like to speak to anyone who saw the Punto being driven away from Robertsbridge.

“If you saw anything please contact us, no matter how little you think you know. The information you have could be vital.”
