Dank start didn’t send young Littlehampton racers off track

SPEED-LOVING youngsters flocked to Littlehampton on Saturday to put their home-made racers to the test.

Pupils from 16 primary schools across Sussex took part in the Greenpower Goblins race, in Banjo Road.

And it was schools in the Gazette area which proved to be the real cream of the crop, scooping an array top awards.

The young engineers from Summerlea Community Primary School topped the table, being crowned overall champions this year.

Event organiser Becci Dissey, said: “It was an absolutely fantastic day. Even though it was wet that didn’t stop the children from getting round the course.”

The speedy hopefuls took part in a range of races which included a tricky slalom and drag event.

Funtington Primary School were the victors of the drag race, with Summerlea and Rustington’s Georgian Gardens Primary School in second and third.

Rustington Community Primary School won the slalom, with River Beach Primary School taking third and Newick CE Primary second. The spirit of Greenpower went to the Arundel CE Primary school, while St Mary’s CE Primary, in Climping, were hailed as the best presented team.

Rustington primary won portfolio award and the greenest bodywork prize for their recycling inspired design. The best bodywork award went to both of the Georgian Garden cars.
