‘Defenceless’ pony shot with crossbow in East Preston

The pony was believed to be on a farm’s field, near Kingston Lane, when it was attacked, at sometime between 3pm and 5.45pm, yesterday (Wednesday, October 23).

While the animal – named Chaz – suffered a severe injury, with the crossbow bolt penetrating deep into his chest, emergency veterinary assistance saved his life and he is now recovering.

Sergeant Anna Gent, of the Arun neighbourhood policing team, said: “This was an extremely unpleasant attack on a defenceless pony which could have proved fatal.

“The weapon used is believed to be a crossbow, and the bolt (arrow) had to be removed at the scene by a vet.

“The pony suffered deep shock.”

Arun District Council representative for East Preston, councillor Ricky Bower said he was ‘disgusted’ to hear of the attack,

“Whoever the disgusting people, who are responsible for this, are they must be caught.

“I think it’s the most appalling attack.”

Sussex Police has now launched an investigation into the attack and would welcome the public’s help in tracing those responsible.

Sgt Gent added: “Crossbows are dangerous weapons and when used irresponsibly or unlawfully can cause serious or even fatal injuries.
