Workers at Worthing Hospital’s mortuary, the Environment Agency and Worthing Theatres all face uncertainty over the future of their jobs.

Spencer Prosser, director of finance at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “We have provided mortuary and post-mortem services for bereaved families for many years and do so on a not-for-profit basis.

“However, West Sussex County Council has given us notice that we will no longer provide this service, from December 31. After that date, although our mortuaries will still be in use, the bodies of anyone dying outside hospital, or whose death requires a post-mortem, will now need to be taken to another location.

“We have not yet been advised where that location will be, and we are still assessing the implications for everyone affected.”
