Birdwatch at Arundel Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust

I HOPE I'm wrong but I suspect that at some point in life you developed a notion that the British winter was cold and a season to be spent indoors.

This is not correct. Our perception of cold is relative and we are conditioned to think it's cold when really it isn't.

Once you have put on a jumper and a jacket you are no longer cold '“ the ambient temperature in winter is, therefore, not a barrier to enjoying being outside.

Oh, and by the way, it isn't wet either, it is only wet if you forget to put a jacket on, and you wouldn't do that.

Woodlands provide shelter for us and other animals in winter weather, and as there are no leaves on the trees winter is one of the best times to go birding in woodland.

Birds tend to group together in woodlands in winter, so you may see few birds for a while and then they will all come along at once.

Once you come across a mixed group of tits or finches be patient, take your time and watch carefully as they filter through.
