Deputy leader of Mid Sussex District Council John Belsey said there have been six individual cases of fly-tipping in Langton Lane so far this year.

He said: “It is unusual for us to have so many incidents in one location, particularly as the total number of fly tips have reduced across the district recently. The Council always responds quickly to remove fly-tipping as soon as possible, usually within one working day, and we investigate the dumped waste for any clues that will help us to identify and catch the offenders.”

But councillor Belsey said that there was ‘insufficient evidence’ from the recent incidents to allow the council to take action against any of the perpetrators.

He said: “We are continuing to monitor the situation and if any residents have any further information about fly-tipping in this area please contact our waste team on 01444 477440.”

“Fly tipping is an irresponsible and anti-social act that spoils the beautiful Mid Sussex countryside for everyone,” he added.

He said: “Daily I do a walk along Langton Lane, Hurstpierpoint, and have recently noticed much more taking place. Each time I find some I report it to Mid Sussex Council and they are very quick to arrange it’s removal.”

He continued: “I have reported various pieces of furniture, large builders sacks full of all sorts of rubbish and even household appliances (a refrigerator earlier this week).”

Colin added: “It would seem these people dumping the rubbish feel they have found the ideal place to get rid of it for free.”

Sussex Police said fly-tipping is a matter for the local authority unless there is a clear policing purpose, like danger to a public highway.
