Gatwick Airport forced to close runway

Gatwick Airport was forced to close its runway earlier this afternoon.

The airport said it shut the runway to investigate ‘an issue’ at around 3.50pm.

On Twitter Angelica Malin said: “Our flight to @Gatwick_Airport has landed in Stansted because of a hole on the runway... Interesting.”

A spokesman for Gatwick said: “We have now switched our operation to the Northern Runway and flights are departing and arriving from Gatwick.

“There will, however, be some delays to flights because of this.

“The safety and security of our airport and passengers is our number one priority, but we’d like to apologise to passengers impacted today.”
