Graffiti "made my blood boil in disgust" - reader letter

"Dear Sir/ Madam,Reading in the News of the World about the disgraceful behaviour of some mindless scum, who obviously have no decency in them and would prefer to live in a world of Nazism, defacing the war memorial in Worthing made my blood boil in anger and disgust.

The names of every one of those men and women from Worthing, who fought and died so that we could live in a world of freedom and democracy, obviously doesn't mean a thing to these mindless idiots who carried out this hideous crime.

You may be wondering why I have written this letter to you, and here are my reasons:

1) My great-grandfather's name is on the memorial. I feel there is no better reason than this.

2) Until three years ago I lived in Worthing. In the late 70s I was an army cadet who paraded with pride at the memorial on Remembrance Sunday.

3) Having served in the armed forces for eight years in the 80s and lost friends, both in Northern Ireland and the Falklands conflict.

4) I have a brother still serving in the armed forces who is putting his life at risk in this latest war against terrorism.

5) It also degrades the memory of all those others, not only from Worthing but all over the country, who have given their lives for this country, wherever wars and conflicts have been fought.

6) Also give a thought to the parents, husbands, wives, sons and daughters of those who have died and those still risking their lives all over the world at the present time.

I would be very grateful if you would print this letter in full, and any other letters you receive about this disgusting act of vandalism. Hopefully these idiots will soon be brought to justice.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

C. Tulett
