The fire service announced on Twitter at 12pm today (Saturday, August 13): “This is now being left as a controlled burn so there may still be smoke in the area and we are aware of the situation.”

A statement on the ESFRS website yesterday evening said: “Crews from Herstmonceux, Eastbourne and Heathfield attended.

“Firefighters used three main jets, one hose reel jet and 1 in 7 foam to assist in extinguishing the fire.

“As of 20:51, the incident has been scaled down to two appliances as steady progress in extinguishing the fire is being made.

“The cause of the fire is not yet known and a fire investigation will take place in due course.”
