Hastings Jewish group hosts traditional sabbath meal fundraiser for Palestinian poet

Hastings Jews for Justice is throwing open its doors for a traditional ‘shabbat’ meal to raise funds for a young poet in Gaza.

At their ‘Friday night Fundraiser’ the group will be serving a traditional four-course meal, alongside local entertainment on Friday, October 2.

Katy Colley, from the group, said: “Food has always been at the heart of Judaism. Many of us were brought up eating these dishes every Friday night, from chicken soup with lokshen and kneidlach to challah and chopped liver. It is the taste of our shared past, families and childhoods. It also represents the warmth and love of our community, and that is why we are so keen to share them with our community in Hastings.”

The group said it has adapted the dishes to make them as inclusive as possible with every dish now vegan, as well as kosher and halal.

The event will raise funds to help support a young poet and trainee nurse, Hala Mdukh in Gaza.

Shelley Feldman said: “I am proud to be part of Hastings Jews for Justice, and to share a menu especially created for this important fundraiser.

“Oftentimes, it feels like we can do so little, for the many many people suffering in Gaza, and worldwide, but, as it is written, “to save one life, is to save the entire world” so we are focusing, for this event, on one woman, Hala Mdukh, and this feels entirely right. We hope you will join us.”

Hastings Jews for Justice said it aims to support Hala through her university education, which she has now been able to start thanks to the fundraising that has already taken place.

Tickets for the fundraiser on October 2 at The Printworks from 6pm can be bought here at £32 per person: https://ticketlab.app/event/39519-Friday-Night-Fundraiser-tickets#/
