IAN HART: Country has lost someone who could have made a real difference

With the nature of the campaign from both sides surrounding today's EU referendum and the worrying apparent direction the world is taking, an horrendous incident puts things into perspective.

The killing of Labour MP Jo Cox last Thursday not only shocked the world but brought to the attention the fact that while no politician, whatever the colour of their rosette, is perfect, every once in a while one comes along who is something special and is in politics for all the right reasons.

Judging by the evidence of the past week, this country has lost such a person and in a time where many of our politicians are a pale shadow of their predecessors, she clearly was one of that breed from almost a bygone age, in that she was in politics for all the right reasons.

Of all the 650 Members of Parliament, how many of them represent the constituency they were born and raised in?

Jo Cox was one such person, and she spoke of this with great pride on not only on the night of her election victory but also on her maiden speech in Parliament.

Listening to the array of tributes in the last week, from right across the demographic, a mixture of cultures, races and creeds, she had the respect of the entire community and beyond.

Two children have lost a mother, a husband a wife, a family a loving daughter. But I really have the feeling that this country has lost someone who really could have made a difference.
