Kim Bailey opened a women’s fashion shop during last year’s Arundel Festival, after securing a short-term lease on a premises in Tarrant Street.
But the venture was so popular that she decided to stay, and last Friday, she opened Fanny Adams – a permanent shop just a few doors away.
She said: “When the festival was over, I was thinking how it was going to be my last few days, but the option to do another two weeks came up, and eventually I ended up staying past Christmas.
“I absolutely didn’t expect this to happen at the start, but it has been fantastic.”
Mrs Bailey has been a market trader for the past 19 years, while her mother ran a well-established women’s clothing boutique in Chichester.
But the charm of Arundel and love of the festival prompted her to set up the shop.
She said: “The pop-up shop capitalised on the extra trade from the festival. Generally, the footfall in Arundel is really high.
“It is a really good town, which is very individual, and has none of the big chains.
“People know they are going to find something unusual and get a good, personal service, so it was ideal to set-up here.”
Mrs Bailey said her opening day was well-supported, with her products going down well with customers.
While running a shop is ‘completely different’ to the markets, she hopes word-of-mouth will act as an effective marketing tool.
She said: “Even when I had the pop-up shop, I wasn’t able to lay it out as nicely as the new shop.
“We were rushed off our feet during the first couple of days, and I had customers from over the years coming in.
“It is too early to know how well it is going to go, but it seems positive so far.”
She added: “I took the leap and never looked back and I’m glad I did.”
