More parking set to be free for 2014

SCORES of extra free car-parking spaces should be available in Bognor Regis town centre for next year.

Progress in talks between Arun and Bognor councils mean it is likely the Hothamton site with 209 spaces will be added to the current charge-free parking scheme from January 1.

A spokeswoman for Arun District Council said: “Arun is in talks with Bognor Regis Town Council and traders regarding the practicalities for the free two-hour disc parking scheme at Hothamton car park.

“It is hoped the arrangements will be in place for the scheme to start from January 1, 2014.”

Paul Wells, who is involved in the talks, told Bognor Regis Chamber of Commerce’s recent meeting he was hopeful the start would be achieved.

He said: “We have confirmation the extra free places will coming into being. As a trader, I just want to get them available.”

Motorists who want the free parking will have to buy a disc. These are set to go on sale on December 1.

The current disc parking system continues at the Fitzleet and Lyon Street car parks. The Hothamton site’s long-term future depends on regeneration plans.
