Neighbours group call for more drivers

A UNIQUE community group in Steyning has found simplicity is the key to success.

Steyning Good Neighbours was founded 40 years ago and chairman Estelle Hilditch says it had barely changed since.

She gave a presentation to Steyning Parish Council last Monday to explain how the group works and make a plea for more volunteer drivers.

“We take people for medical appointments anywhere in Sussex,” she explained. “We take them there, we wait with them and then we bring them home again. This is unique.”

The group transports the elderly, disabled and housebound, and there is no age limit.

Mrs Hilditch added: “It is a very simple and unique system. It is because of its simplicity that it is so efficient.”

It is totally flexible, so drivers don’t have to commit to specific times.

Mrs Hilditch explained: “Drivers can say when they don’t want to drive, we never ask for an explanation. You tell us when you can drive and we can use you.”

The group is a voluntary, independent organisation that is self-financing, with money mainly coming from clients and driver donations.
