CLUB REMINDERS: The Riverside Club Christmas lunch on December 9 is almost fully booked. Coach leaves from the Causeway at 11.15am. There will be no meeting in the Church Hall. For all members, the following Friday, December 16, will be the last meeting of 2016 in the church hall, with cake, wine and a raffle with a light hearted quiz, some music and a few other jollities. The club should recommence on Friday January 20 but at present we have no speaker, due to unforeseen circumstances, so we will confirm that date nearer Christmas.

CHRIST CHURCH: This week, the church is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the foundation of our predecessor church, the Tabernacle in Lewes High Street, back in November 1816. The church currently has an exhibition display on the history of the church over the last 200 years, showing how it is closely entwined with the life of the town over this period. There will be a celebration dinner for church members and friends at the church tomorrow, Saturday, and we are looking forward to welcoming back a number of former ministers and members, some of whom are travelling a long way to return to Lewes. On Sunday we have a 200th anniversary service at the church at 10.30am, this will be led by our minister, Rev John Gordon and the sermon will be preached by Alan Yates, the Lay Moderator of the United Reformed Church. The service will be attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Lewes and local MP, Maria Caulfield. All are welcome at this service. This week is also Advent Sunday, the start of the church’s year, when Christians focus on the approaching birth of Jesus. We have a special booklet of readings for the season of Advent , Christmas and Epiphany called Emmanuel, God with Us. The booklet is available free at the church .for young children and their carers.

LEWES NEVILLE WI: The WI met on Wednesday November 1 at St Mary’s Church Hall, Highdown Road. Our speaker for the evening was Fleur Newton-Edwards. She spoke to us about Mindfulness, which is an ancient Buddhist practice which is very relevant for today’s hectic, stressful life. It is a form of meditation in which a person focuses on the present moment. Fleur ended her talk by taking us through a short meditation which left me feeling very relaxed. The competition for a Christmas bauble was won by Stella Stephens. Our December meeting is a Christmas celebration and members have been asked to bring food on the theme of Sussex as well as a plate, cutlery and a glass. We have been getting into the Christmas mood with a Christmas wreath making workshop at Riverside Flowers. On Thursday November 17, Claire led us through the process and we all ended up with gorgeous wreathes to hang on our doors. It was a lovely evening and many thanks to Claire for holding this most enjoyable (and productive) evening.
