New flats for Barnham get go-ahead

NEW flats have been backed for the centre of Barnham.

Planning inspector John Papworth has approved the 11 flats and a shop on land behind 43-47 Barnham Road.

He has allowed an appeal by Graham Norgate against Arun District Council’s refusal of planning permission for the scheme.

Mr Papworth’s decision will be reported to the council’s development control committee next week. His report states: “The development is in a sustainable location close to transport and other local shops and services.

“The level of car parking and open space is appropriate to this location. The development would not harm the character and appearance of the area and would enhance the same with regard to the present underused and unattractive site.”

He imposed 15 conditions to control the scheme.

Arun had rejected the proposal because of its character and lack of private amenity space.
