Beach plans inquiry

HERBRAND Walk Beach Preservation Society was very pleased with the day's events at the appeal hearing at the town hall on Tuesday October 12.

Every party’s case, including Mr Hall’s, received a fair hearing and all the major issues were ventilated.

We think the outcome will turn on the facts that the beach is outside the development boundary of the Bexhill Local Plan, that the site is undeveloped beach frontage, the need still to prove that a countryside location is vital to the project, the clearly inadequate

road access and the major issue concerning land ownership raised by Rother District Council.

We were also pleased to note the council statement that it has no formal policy to development Herbrand Walk beach as a watersports centre.

With regard to the remarks attributed to Keith Rhodes at the end of the article on Friday October 15, this report gives the impression that these opinions were addressed to the Inspector at the hearing.

This is not the case. Mr Rhodes did not speak at the hearing.

The sole speaker in support of Mr Hall was Mrs McDonald, who produced no evidence in support of her statement.

We thank all of the many concerned residents who crowded the council chamber to demonstrate our support for our case, including those who were unfortunately locked out due to lack of seating space.

The society now has more than 600 members, with the list increasing daily!
