He joined Harveys Brewery area manager Simon Yates, landlady Karen Gold and manager Mia Gold together with about 50 regulars for a service of blessing.

“Be sure to welcome strangers into your home,” Peter quoted from Hebrews 13:2. “By doing this some people have welcomed angels as guests, without even knowing it.”

The blessing, more common in fishing and mining towns, recognised The Plough as a shelter, a home, a place of work and a place of hospitality.

Said Peter: “It is a great privilege to carry out this blessing on a place that is so popular with villagers.”

Simon Yates of Harveys said: “I have not come across a blessing of this sort before - but everyone is very appreciative of the gesture.”
