Keyhole secured win for local golfer at Victoria Classic

To be sure of securing a place for his team in the prestigious Victoria Classic senior men’s golf tournament to be played at Puttenham Golf Club, Surrey on 3rd October 2013, golfer Paul Roberts from Billingshurst submitted his entry form in February.

Little did he know what the ensuing 8 months would have in store for him.

Taking advantage of the Mary How Trust based in Pulborough, Paul and his wife Melanie decided to go for a free health check and scan.

To his horror the scan revealed a ‘mass’ on one of his kidneys. A referral to Chichester hospital confirmed the diagnosis and Paul had keyhole surgery to remove the infected kidney in mid June.

The day after his operation Melanie went to visit Paul in hospital only to find him sitting on the bed, bags packed and ready to go home.

It took a further two months before the pain subsided enough to allow Paul to even contemplate swinging a golf club again.

Still uncertain as to how much his operation might handicap his golf, Paul called his team mates at West Chiltington Golf Club and offered to drop out of the team for the Victoria Classic.

They would have none of it and insisted that he was there to play on the day.

To be fair they could claim to have carried him having carded three excellent scores but Paul in turn played a very steady round of golf thus securing their victory.

Holding the Victoria Classic Cup aloft Paul complimented Puttenham Golf Club on the superb condition of the Course, the warm welcome, hospitality and delicious meal that all the players had enjoyed.

Suffice to say Paul and his team mates plan to be back next year to defend their title.
