Safety first

It was with shock and sadness that I read (Gazette, October 31) the adverse reaction of a small number of people to the last-minute cancellation of this annual event due to extreme weather conditions beyond human control.

I understand there were those who wanted a refund for the programme purchased and indeed any donations made.

My heart goes out to the many adults and children who must work tirelessly throughout the year to organise and participate in this splendid event and I can only begin to imagine their disappointment, BUT the safety of all concerned was of paramount importance and given the appalling weather on the night, there was no other course of action. All concerned in the final decision to cancel were absolutely right.

The event is free to all and no-one is obliged to make a contribution, so I would hope that those who are aggrieved at having parted with a pound or two will have a re-think and realise that this constitutes only a very small proportion of the target which would have benefited various groups in the area.

Let us hope that the changeable climate will be kind to us next year.
