Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the new national lockdown at the weekend as Covid-19 cases continue to rise at a concerning rate.

It will take place from November 5 until December 2 and people are being asked to stay at home unless for specific purposes – such as childcare, exercise, buying food, or if you cannot work from home.

‘Non-essential shops’

This includes clothing shops, electronics shops, vehicle showrooms, travel agents, betting shops, car washes, and vape shops.

All businesses which are considered ‘non-essential’ must close from Thursday.

Pubs, bars and restaurants

Pubs, bars and restaurants across Horsham will have to close, but can still provide takeaway and delivery food and drink, excluding alcohol.

Leisure facilities must close – including gyms, swimming pools, golf courses and dance studios.

Pavilions in the Park and Steyning Leisure Centre have both confirmed they are to close during lockdown.

And entertainment venues including cinemas, museums, galleries, bingo halls and zoos must also shut up shop.

Matthew Effemey, operations manager at The Capitol said: “Inevitably there is a sense of ‘here we go again’ about the closure.

“But this time we do feel remarkably positive. We are really hoping that on December 2 we can go back to the tiered system.

“There has to be some recognition that Horsham’s [virus] numbers were relatively low compared to the rest of the country and that Horsham should be back in a low tier and that we can continue with our socially-distanced auditorium.

If the lockdown is extended, then we will just make sure that we have got everything in place, and we will just have to hope that it won’t be extended for a long time. Whenever the end of the tunnel is, we have got to make sure that we have got great shows on offer.”

Hairdressers and beauty salons

Hairdressers, beauty and nail salons, tattoo and piercing parlours, spas and tanning salons must also close from Thursday (November 5).

Libraries

Libraries are also having to close for the lockdown.

Weddings and funerals?

Funerals can be attended by a maximum of 30 people but weddings are not permitted. Churches and other places of worship will close unless they are being used for a funeral or other specific reasons specified by the government.

Hotels and holiday accommodation

Holiday parks, hotels and B&Bs will also have to close for this four-week period, as overnight stays and holidays are not allowed.

But what can stay open?

Food shops, supermarkets, and garden centres are allowed to remain open, following covid-secure guidelines.

Retail which is considered non-essential can remain open for delivery to customers and click-and-collect.

Schools and universities can also remain open.

Public spaces like parks, playgrounds, public gardens, and the beach remain open.

Both of Horsham’s markets have confirmed they will continue to trade with essential products during lockdown.

The market, based in Horsham’s Carfax, will remain open every Saturday offering a range of essential produce stalls and street food to take away. Stalls will be spaced out to enable social distancing, all traders will wear face coverings in the presence of customers and hand sanitiser is readily available. Click and collect and home delivery services are also being re-introduced.

People can book online before 9am each Friday at www.horshammarkets.co.uk for collection from the market or delivery to homes within a five mile radius of Horsham town centre.

The Bishopric General Market will also continue to offer fresh fruit and vegetables and essential produce on Saturdays through November, Horsham District Council confimed.

On Thursdays fresh bakery products and a small selection of other essential products will be on offer in Carfax. The street food traders will return on Thursdays in December when the lockdown is set to lift.

Horsham District Council cabinet member for the local economy councillor Paul Clarke said: “I am really pleased that by observing social distancing health and safety measures and switching their distribution methods, our market traders are being able to continue selling their goods at this difficult time.

Simon Teesdale of Food Rocks who operate the Carfax’s Horsham Markets on behalf of the council added: “We are delighted that we can continue trading in the town and also employ our home delivery and click and collect services which have enabled our traders to continue to supply wonderful quality local produce to the community during these difficult times.”
