BT remove telephone boxes in Eastbourne to be replaced with Street Hubs
BT has revealed it will remove telephone boxes across the UK, including Eastbourne, to be in Ofcom’s guidance on payphones.
The British telecommunications company have been spotting removing two telephone boxes on Terminus Road yesterday, November 5.
A spokesperson for BT said: “We’re continuing to review our payphone presence – removing those that are no longer being used, in line with Ofcom’s revised guidance on payphone removals.
“We are removing two phone boxes on Terminus Road and will be replacing them with a Street Hub.”
A Street Hub is a digital screen that can provide public Wi-Fi, free phone calls to UK landlines and mobiles, access to public services, secure power-only USB ports for rapid device charging, direct 999 emergency call button and community and emergency awareness messages, including police alerts.
The spokesperson added: “Today, with 98% of the adult population using a mobile phone and significant improvements to mobile coverage, there has been a huge decline in payphone usage.
“BT has around 9,000 operational public payphones across the UK. This is down from around 15,000 two years ago. Calls made from our public telephones have fallen by around 90% in the past decade.
“The replacement allows us to modernise and transform our payphone estate, while offering improved features and services for the community.”
