Construction of controversial Eastbourne bus lane to begin in Autumn
Construction of a controversial bus lane in Eastbourne will begin this Autumn, East Sussex County Council have confirmed.
Plans for the bus lane were approved by county councillors back in October, 2025, as part of the government-funded Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP).
Local residents have voiced their concern about the development for more than two years, with businesses warning of the threat to their existence if it were to go ahead.
A spokesperson for East Sussex County Council said: “Construction of the bus lane along Seaside (A259), Eastbourne, is expected to begin in the autumn and detailed timescales will be shared with the public once confirmed.”

It comes after another bus lane’s approval in the town sparked backlash from local businesses.
A silver birch tree will be felled in Station Parade to make way for an eastbound bus lane between Wharf Place and the railway station, leaving owner of That Coffee Place – the cafe at which the tree resides outside of – ‘devastated’.
