Crawley WW2 veteran receives cards from all over the world to celebrate his 102nd birthday
Crawley WW2 veteran George Durrant has received hundreds of cards from all over the world to celebrate his 102nd birthday.
Mr Durrant lived through the Blitz before serving overseas in India and Burma with the Intelligence Corps during World War Two.
To celebrate his latest milestone, Joseph Smith from The Last of the Greats, a voluntary history group, started an appeal for cards after meeting him.
The Last of the Greats’ appeal for cards said: “Our wonderful friend, George Durrant, is turning 102 years old on July 4th! Let's show him how much appreciatuon we have for him by flooding his mailbox with birthday wishes.

“We are aiming to get as many birthday cards as possible from near and far to celebrate this incredible gentleman. Whether you are local or living overseas, please take a moment to write a quick card and send some birthday love to a true hero!”
And the war veteran was overwhelmed by the amount of cards received.
Daughter Ann Russell told us: “Joseph brought 145 cards to Dads house on Saturday morning that were sent to the Albatross club.
"A further 15 arrived there on Saturday morning so 160 and we fully expect them to still receive some this week. They were sent from UK, Australia, New Zealand, America, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Guernsey etc. Dad was overwhelmed by people’s kindness.”
The cards were initially sent to the Albatross Club in Bexhill before being delivered to Mr Durrant.
