East Sussex town makes top five most laid-back worker areas in UK, according to new research

Lewes has been named the fourth most laid-back place to work in the UK, according to new data analysing average weekly working hours.

The company’s research showed that Lewes has the fourth shortest working week, with residents working 168 minutes less per week than the national average of 33 hours and six minutes.

The research also showed that workers spend 30 hours and 18 minutes at work each week overall.

Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator, said: “It’s fascinating to see how much the average work week differs around the country. The data shows that the difference between the areas with the longest and shortest working weeks is over eight and a half hours per week, more than an average working day.

“It’s also interesting to see the gender split in many locations. Every area in the study had men working longer hours than women on average, but there was a dramatic difference between Moray, where men work 11 hours and 54 minutes longer per week than women, and Haringey in London, where men work just one hour and 36 minutes more than women. London also had nine out of the top ten areas with the smallest differences between the average male and female working weeks.”

The ranking was based on the average number of hours worked by all workers in each UK area, with the estimated number of workers used as a tiebreaker.

The Orkney Islands were ranked first with the lowest average at 27.3 hours. The other areas in the top five were: West Devon (29.7 hours), Moray (30.1 hours) and Chichester (30.5 hours).

Three Scottish regions and two Welsh areas were in the top ten, alongside several places in England. Lewes was the only East Sussex area included in the ranking.
