New Worthing Blue Plaque found to have incorrect dates after unveiling

A Blue Plaque unveiled at Worthing Library just days ago is having to be amended after an error in the dates was spotted.

Marian Frost dedicated her life to championing books and even persuaded one of the richest people in the world to help fund a new public library for Worthing.

But the plaque unveiled by The Worthing Society in her name on Friday turned out to be incorrect and will now have to be amended.

It reads: "Marian Frost 1877 – 1936 Pioneer Head Librarian Museum Curator Inspiration behind the building of Worthing Library 1908"

But West Sussex County Council has since been told the correct dates are September 27, 1876, to December 27, 1935.

A council spokesperson said: “It has come to light that the historical information used to produce the citation on the Marian Frost Blue Plaque was muddled, owing to her death on December 27, 1935, but it only being registered in January 1936 and all of the obituaries and tributes being published in 1936.

"This can sometimes happen when dealing with historical documents to compile information.

"We are grateful that the error over dates was spotted and can be put right quickly with the help of the Worthing Society. Their plaque supplier can amend the date without needing to recast it, and at no cost to the taxpayer.

"We are keen to ensure that a small human error does not move the focus away from Marian who was an incredible female library leader, a trailblazer and passionate innovator who dedicated her life to championing books and the power of libraries.”
