Pigeon ‘fighting for its life’ at Sidlesham wildlife hospital after being shot

A pigeon is ‘fighting for its life’ at a Sidlesham wildlife hospital after being shot.

Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital in Cow Lane have said it has been treating the injured bird after a bullet passed straight through his body beneath one of his wings, leaving a large wound.

In an update shared by the hospital on October 18, staff described how the pigeon had endured several difficult days as he fought to survive his injuries.

A spokesperson for Brent Lodge said: “The bullet went straight through under his wing leaving a large hole. He required several surgeries to clean out the wound because the force of the shot compacted the hole with feathers and flesh. If left untreated he would ultimately die from an infection.

“Our vet opted to leave the wound open rather than close it with stitches or staples at this stage, allowing it to heal naturally and for further cleansing if needed.

“He is on pain relief and antibiotics so that he is more comfortable during his recovery. It is still early days for him but for now he is safe and is surrounded by caring people.”

British Transport Police launched an investigation after the birds, including feral pigeons, wood pigeons, collared doves and a racing pigeon, were discovered on a platform and in the station car park.

Veterinary examinations found evidence that the birds had been struck by ball bearings. Police believe they may have been killed elsewhere before being dumped at the station.

British Transport Police and Sussex Police have been investigating the incident, with officers appealing for information about a car seen leaving the station car park in the early hours of the morning.
