Worthing police officers commended for saving woman’s life in sea rescue

Worthing police officers have been commended for their ‘exceptional’ work, including saving a woman’s life in a sea rescue.

Sussex Police hosted its West Sussex Divisional Awards at Arundel Castle to celebrate the ‘courage, professionalism and outstanding public service’ of its officers and staff.

The ceremony, held on September 28, was attended by senior police officers and staff, as well as High Sheriff of West Sussex Gary Shipton.

West Sussex Divisional Commander Chief Superintendent Imran Asghar said: “Our annual awards recognise the incredible work of individual officers and staff and the professionalism of our teams working to serve the public.

“Every recipient has shown they are a credit to Sussex Police, and they have each made a huge difference to the communities in which they serve

"The awards highlight how day in, day out, our staff and officers rise to overcome complex challenges. From supporting sexual abuse victims across international borders, to saving lives in emergencies, I am proud of how they have distinguished themselves.

“Their dedication and service help the force to achieve our priorities: to protect communities, catch criminals, and to deliver an outstanding service.”

The evening saw officers from Worthing’s Neighbourhood Policing Team A-section receive Divisional Commendations for saving a woman’s life. Sussex Police said the team waded into the sea to rescue the woman in distress, then attended to her injuries on the shoreline, in September 2025.

Worthing District Commander Chief Inspector James Davidson said: “The officers demonstrated exceptional teamwork, courage and compassion in the face of an immediate threat to life.

“They kept her calm and provided critical emergency medical care to prevent a tragic outcome, and ensured she was able to receive the treatment and support she urgently required.”

Members of the Worthing Response Investigation team A-section also received Divisional Commendations for their record in solving crimes and prioritising vulnerable victims.

Sussex Police said they ensured positive court outcomes, including supporting victims of domestic abuse through Evidence Led Prosecutions where necessary.

Chief Inspector James Davidson added: “The Response Investigation Team A-section members consistently provide exceptional service to the public, and have the best results for solving domestic abuse cases in the force. This reflects the determination, skill and collective effort of the whole team.”
