The Old Railway Station Hotel has been named the 7th most unusual hotel in the UK. Appreciating its five original vintage Pullman carriages and the opportunity to have afternoon tea in the old waiting room – or even on the platform – visitors say they enjoyed the hotel’s “blend of character and individuality.”

The list was compiled by Betway Casino, which analysed Trip Advisor reviews for the country’s most unconventional stays.

Other hotels included on the list were the West Usk Lighthouse in Newport and Hotel Pelirocco in Brighton.

Jennie Hudson, who co-owns the Old Railway Station with her husband Blair, told the Midhurst and Petworth Observer: “It's always wonderful to hear that we have been featured in a list of special places or won an award - we never tire of it.  It always means so much to everyone here that we are recognised for what we are and what we do.

"We believe that we are so much more than an unusual hotel.  We really are a special place, where the modern world drifts into the background, and all guests can enjoy a truly first-class experience.”

Formerly Petworth Railway Station, built in 1892, the main building fell into disrepair after 1955, when passenger services to the town came to an end.

The building was renovated in the 1980s, and original Pullman railway carriages were brought onto the site to accommodate guests and offer a refined space for dining.

Mrs Hudson said: “Running The Old Railway Station is a 'labour of love'; the carriages and station building are all made of wood, so take a lot of time and money to maintain.

"The Station building and dining car have all undergone extensive maintenance over the past few years - we are now working on a two-year project to renovate the exterior of the four accommodation carriages.

"Once that's completed in late 2027, we will be starting on the main building again.”
