AN estimated 20,000 people made tracks for Littlehampton Wheels 2011 at the weekend.

The celebration of everything on wheels, from skates to wall-of-death motorcycles, and from a penny-farthing cycle to the latest motor showroom models, was hailed as the best yet by organisers.

Glorious weather and new attractions at the two-day event, in its fifth year, combined to entice large crowds off the beach onto The Green, as well as giving residents another highly entertaining weekend.

“It’s been fantastic,” said Miriam Nichols, business development manager at Arun District Council. Miriam helped to stage Wheels with Keith Croft, of Littlehampton-based Upfront Events, and Steve Cusack, of media company CAM.

“I would be surprised if, over the weekend, we had had fewer than 20,000 people here,” said Miriam.

“It’s definitely been the best one yet. There’s not a single attraction that hasn’t been busy and it’s good to see so many people enjoying Littlehampton and the seafront, and, hopefully, they will come back again. We have had good feedback, too, from the motor dealers exhibiting here.”

There was much to see for free at Wheels, with reasonable charges for attractions such as watching the remarkable Messham’s Wall of Death, on which motorcyclists with nerves of steel rode the vertical wall, which was thrilling enough, but then performed stunts such as riding side-saddle and with no hands.
