Plans to create six flats in Littlehampton

Plans to create six flats in Littlehampton have been updated after an earlier proposal was refused over concerns about its impact on the conservation area and neighbouring homes.

The latest application relates to 6A and 7A Selbourne Road and 25B and 25C Western Road, which would see an existing flat and light industrial premises converted into six flats.

The previous plans included a first-floor extension and solar panels but were refused by Arun District Council in April.

Planning officers said the proposed extension was too large and dominant and would harm the character of the street.

The council also raised concerns about the effect on the Littlehampton Seafront Conservation Area. The site is identified as a locally listed building of character.

The officers’ report also said the extension would have had an overbearing impact on the garden at 23 Western Road and the proposed windows would have overlooked number 25.

Public comments on the refused application included support for the additional housing but one resident objected to the lack of parking, highlighting the existing pressures on nearby streets.

The applicant has since updated the design following the refusal and comments from council officers.

Documents submitted with the latest plans say the existing footprint and historic features of the building will be retained to protect the character of the area.

The applicant says the changes made to the proposed first-floor are intended to reduce its visual impact and make it more appropriate for the conservation area.

Solar panels are also planned within the slated roof slopes.

The council is due to make a decision by December 16, with any comments due by November 26.
