Plans to turn historic building into home submitted to Arun council
Plans to turn the historic Sparks Yard building in Arundel into a single four-bedroom home have been submitted to Arun District Council.
The Grade II listed building at 18 Tarrant Street, dates back to around 1880 and was originally used as a furniture warehouse for Charles Sparks and his associated business.
The property has a red-brick exterior and a traditional slate roof and has been empty since January 2019 after the independent shop, Sparks Yard, closed.
The application seeks to change the ground floor from commercial use to residential and bring the entire building together as one home.
According to a statement submitted with the plans, the building was on the market for five years as a mix of commercial and residential but no buyer or occupier was secured.
It stated: “Unifying the building under full domestic occupation secures its long-term viability, prevents continued vacancy, and removes the commercial pressure.”
The plans include restoring the traditional Victorian door at the entrance, converting the existing lean-to to create a garage and storage space, alongside wider restoration works.
Other proposed works include a full re-roofing, brickwork repairs and traditional lime mortar repointing.
The applicant also proposes energy efficient improvements such as an air source heat pump, underfloor heating, upgraded insulation and solar panels.
The property lies within the Arundel Conservation Area and was Grade II listed in December 1994.
Arun District Council is set to make a decision by December 19, with comments to be made by November 26.
