Proms move from park to garden

Proms in the Park is going on tour in Bognor Regis for this year only. The annual celebration of patriotic pride is being moved temporarily to the Royal Norfolk Hotel this Saturday.

The change '“ thanks to the hotel's owners '“ is necessary because of the restoration work being carried out at the usual venue of Hotham Park.

This appeared to rule out Bognor Regis Town Council holding the proms for 2008. But the popularity of the annual performance by Bognor Regis Concert Band meant action was taken to ensure the 1,000-plus members of the audience who usually go along will not be disappointed.

The event's one-off location has only been made possible by the backing of leading grocery chain Asda, which has provided 1,500 to enable an inflatable bandstand to be installed on the front lawn of the hotel.

Cllr Don Eldridge, the chairman of the town council's events committee, said: "The funding will ensure that we are able to provide a suitable performance area for the band and cover the additional costs involved."

Jonathan Refoy, Asda head of property communications, said: "All Asda stores aim to be at the heart of their communities.

"We are proud to be able to show our commitment to the community here in Bognor."

Solicitors Staffurth and Bray have also agreed to provide a smaller sum to back the concert programme. These will be available along with Union flags for those members of the audience who want to fully get involved in the atmosphere of the occasion.

The concert starts at 7.30pm. Members of the public are asked to park in the Regis Centre car park along the seafront because the hotel's parking is for its residents only.

Asda is currently seeking planning permission to build a store at North Bersted.
