The talented cornet and trumpet player, 18, a former Warden Park School pupil, received the Ray Lomas Trophy from conductor Steve Winter given by the Mid Sussex Brass band. The award is given for outstanding musical achievement during his time with the band and Ben has also reached county band level.

Band secretary Paul Homewood said: “Ben started with us when he was seven and is now off to the Royal Welsh School of Music and Drama to study trumpet.

“Ray’s family had donated the Cup to our Band, in memory of Ray’s association with us, up until his death last year, and it will be presented each year, to a young member of the band who shows musical dexterity. Ray had always encouraged this, in his long association as a Euphonium player within our band.”

In another success for the band, Hannah Labus is off to the Northern College of Music to study Euphonium.

Paul said: “Due to players leaving for music colleges and university, we are keen to hear from anyone interested in joining us and currently have vacancies within our band in both our Youth and Senior Band.”

The Band rehearses in the Cyprus Hall, Burgess Hill, on Thursdays. Visit www.msbb.net or tel:01444 454824
