She visited the site on Saturday where she met members of the Rye Museum.

The Museum is hoping to transfer from East Street to the Rye Castle area in a largely self-funding proposal to create an innovative new location between the Ypres and Women’s Tower.

Amber said, “This is a bold, ambitious plan put together by local people to protect the collection and enhance the current Castle.

“It’s wonderful to see local people using their time, and expertise to come up with a really positive solution.”

Chairman of the Museum Cllr Jo Kirkham, and Tim Duffie, Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee for the Museum, showed Amber the plans and the location for the new building.

Architect Dominic Manning commented: “My partner Tim Duffie has proposed plans that ensure survival and enhancement of the museum and the collection.

“ It is contemporary and innovative, and wholly preserves the medieval building.

The proposal involves selling off the museum’s East Street site where visitor numbers have been declining.

It means the town’s collection can be housed on one site whereas at the moment it is split.

The plans won the unanimous support of Rye Town Council’s planning committee when it discussed them earlier this month.

Cllr Kirkham said: “There have been a lot of positive comments in the town about the proposals and when the plans went on display we had a lot of people coming along.”
