Now the group is working hard to raise £20,000 to replace two of its buses.

To celebrate the anniversary, and raise funds, Rye Community Transport has launched 20/20 which will see 20 events taking place.

The first event is happening at Rye Community Centre on Wednesday October 16 when a Tea Dance takes place between 3pm - 5pm.

Rye Community Transport chairman John Izod said: “This is a wonderful time for us. Twenty years is such a milestone and we want our passengers and friends to enjoy it with us.

“But we have had one of our buses for most of that time and another has just clocked up half a million kilometres so we will have to replace them which is why we need to raise £20,000.

“We have terrific support from the community and we are very grateful for the help and donations.

“There are all sorts of other events throughout the year for people to attend and enjoy but we thought that a Tea Dance would be lovely to start with and I’m looking forward to seeing many of our passengers and friends there - I may even be able to dance with some of them.”

Rye Community Transport plays a vital role in the local community helping elderly and people and those with mobility problems to get to the shops and attend appointments with its specially equipped buses.

It also helps local school children to attend schools outside Rye.

Rye Community Transport has also provided a service for special events in the town, such as the Olympic Torch Relay, and helps prevent people in rural areas, around Rye from feeling isolated.
