Share memories of World War I

With the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War in 1914 approaching, George Kiloh of the Battle and District Historical Society Research Group has been trying to find out as much as possible about the men of Battle who served in the forces, both those who died and those who survived.

In total, he has found 350 names, including several who died whose names do not appear on the memorial.

One was Sgt Frank Hoad, born in Battle, whose death was immortalised in Blunden’s poem ‘Pillbox’. There are also one or two mysteries to solve.

The aim is to create a memory book to commemorate the contribution that the men of Battle made.

Many of the men will have family still in Battle today.

George would like to hear from anyone who knows anything about any of the men who have served, or anyone who has any mementos from the period, including photographs.

From Monday November 4, known details of the men will be available to see in Battle Library.

There will also be feedback forms in the library for visitors to provide any information they may have, including any tales of the homefront in Battle in WWI.
