The Coming of Christ was written by John Masefield, with music by Gustav Holst, and it was commissioned for a performance at Canterbury Cathedral in 1928.

The English poet and writer is largely remembered as the author of the classic children’s novels, The Midnight Folk and The Box of Delights, and poems including The Everlasting Mercy and Sea-Fever, but he also wrote a large number of dramatic pieces, mostly based on Christian themes.

The performance, at 7.30pm, will feature actors from Wick Theatre Company, accompanied by Shoreham Chamber Choir, musicians from the University of Chichester, organist John March and pianist Lesley-Anne Sammons, under the direction of conductor Stuart Hutchinson.

Mr Hutchinson said: “The Coming of Christ was a great success at the time, with subsequent performances at Lancing College and Salisbury, but has rarely been performed since.”

Tickets are £6, available at the door, or £5 in advance from Shoreham Parish Centre, New Road, Shoreham.
