The Gazette’s campaign in helping raise £1,800 for Arun Co-ordinated Community Transport (ACCT) was praised by the industry body for newspapers, the Newspaper Society.

The story was featured on the Local Newspaper Week’s website as one of the best in the country.

In February, the Gazette ran a front page story reporting of the break-in at ACCT’s base, in the Rudford Industrial Estate.

The charity’s future had been left in jeopardy by the crime.

ACCT’s project manager feared the financial damage would be too severe and that he would have to sell off one of its vital buses which helps to transport hundreds of elderly people across Arun.

As a result of the Gazette’s story, readers donated more than £1,800 to cover the damage.

Chief reporter Tom Cotterill said: “Our work helped to save a cause which is a vital link for the area’s elderly. It was amazing at the response it had.”
