Today is Rudgwick Apple Day - a celebration of all things apple

As the days get cooler, the nights draw in and people return to work, the arrival of autumn does at least bring one ray of sunshine: this season is apple season. Gardens across the country will see an abundance of the sweet, crispy, quintessentially English fruit, and today the Old Rudgwick Cider Society are hosting Apple Day - a celebration of all things apple.

Visitors will be able to sample freshly squeezed apple juice and enjoy a range of rural themed stalls, from spinning, hedge-laying, pottery, and wood-turning. An array of delicious local produce will be on offer, including chutneys, jams, WI cakes, toffee apples and a locally made cheese known as the ‘Sussex Charmer’. And, inevitably, apples.

There will be a wealth of activities for children, including (messy!) apple games, face painting and races, and young and old alike can enjoy the apple tombola, raffle, Morris dancing and even terrier racing (please bring your own terriers).

Vintage ciders such as ‘Old Chopper’, ‘Strumpet’ and ‘The Doctor’ will be on sale from the Old Rudgwick Cider Society as well as a limited edition of ‘Vinegar Witch’ Cider vinegar. The Social Club will be providing a Hog Roast with apple sauce. Rudgwick Lottery tickets will be available for sale on the day, with a first prize of £500.

Over the past four years the Apple Day event has raised over £4000, money which has been donated to local youth projects, Rudgwick Book Exchange, CHASE and Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospices. It has also bought five defibrillators for the village.

The event, which is open to all, will take place at Rudgwick Sports and Social Club (RSCC), King George V Playing Fields, Bucks Green, Rudgwick, RH12 3JJ, today from 10am to 4pm.
