Festival of Speed traffic builds as thousands head to Goodwood

Heavy traffic has built up on roads around Chichester, as thousands of visitors make their way to the second day of the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The four-day motoring spectacular got under way on Thursday (July 9), with large crowds arriving at the Goodwood estate.

Around 10.30am on Thursday, a social media post read: “Heads up for FOS today, Lavant gridlocked due to traffic lights just after Earl of March pub, other direction queue back to Binderton.

“Obviously very bad getting into Chichester as well, bypass stacked up to Fishbourne roundabout.”

The longest delays were on New Road, where traffic is slow in both directions between the A285 Stane Street and Claypit Lane near Goodwood Motor Circuit. The congestion is expected to continue throughout the event, which runs until Sunday.

On Friday morning, an AA Traffic News report read: “Queueing traffic due to the Festival of Speed (Day 2) on all approaches at Goodwood Motor Circuit.

"Congestion to the A286 at Singleton back through West Dean, and coming in from East Lavant, Strettington, Halnaker and Westhampnett.”

Drivers travelling to the Festival of Speed, or passing through the Chichester area, are being advised to allow extra time for their journeys over the weekend as visitor numbers remain high.
