'Just brilliant, a physical beast' - Brighton player ratings at Manchester City as sublime duo score 9/10s
How the Seagulls rated against Manchester City in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium
Brighton delivered the performance and received a little luck along the way as they held on for a memorable 1-0 win against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
On Wednesday - in the Carabao Cup - luck went against them as they twice took the lead against City but lost out on penalties. This time, it was nervy, it was tense but Brighton got over the line. It was a fifth clean sheet in six games in the Premier League and keeps them third in table.
Albion's opener all came from Lewis Dunk's excellent crossfield pass to Diego Gomez. The Paraguyan winger then delivered an excellent low cross that ricocheted off Maxim De Cuyper at the far post and Yasin Ayari was well placed to guide home beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Albion then had a spell where they were loose in possession and City pressed forward.
Iliman Ndiaye steered a header just wide from Elliott Anderson's cross and Bart Verbruggen then saved well from an angled shot from the lively Ndiaye.
Brighton made a fast start after the break and De Cuyper should have made it 2-0 as he blasted over from Yasin Ayari's cross.
City pushed hard and Verbruggen did superbly to deny Ndiaye and then even better to thwart Nunes with a low save.
Brighton player ratings
Bart Verbruggen - 9: Looks very assured these days and playing some of the best football his career. His save to deny Ndiaye at the start of the second half was vital. The one to deny Nunes on the hour was stunning
Costinha - 7: The Portuguese was up against Doku and kept the Belgian winger pretty quiet for the most part. Very impressive performance
Luka Vuskovic - 7: Dunk did most of the heavy lifting today but Vuskovic played his part. Defends with such composure and remained focussed throughout. It was an exhausting match mentally and physically and he stood up well. He’s 19!
Lewis Dunk - 9: Missed a vital penalty on Wednesday but responded Lovely ping to Gomez who then set up the first goal for Ayari. A vital block on 21 minutes to deny Anderson at the near post and then an even better one to thwart Haaland on 40 minutes.
Olivier Boscagli - 5: Back in the left back role and had to deal with the lively Ndiaye. Loose in possession and also struggled to get distance when clearing with his right foot at times. He’s a much better centre back.
Pascal Gross - 7: The 35-year-old is a master of his craft. Plays with skill and guile and is Hurzeler’s manager on the pitch
Yasin Ayari - 8: A very composed finish to open the scoring on 11 minutes. Such a good athlete in the middle of the park.Did not stop from start to finish
Chema - 7: Recovered from a hip injury and straight back into the XI. Tactically very aware and deals with problems before they arise. Booked on 20 minutes for a foul on Bouaddi and subbed off for Wieffer on the hour.
Diego Gomez - 8: Looked dangerous early on with one drive through the middle and teed-up De Cuyper. He then provided the cross for Albion's opener. A physical beast.
Maxim De Cuyper - 7: Made a nuisance of himself at the far post to create the first goal for Ayari. His fifth assist of the season. Should have scored on 47 minutes when he blazed over from Ayari's cross. Booked for a foul on Ndiaye and replaced by Yalcouye on 72.
Charalmapos Kostoulas - 6: Impressive work rate once again but his touch was a little wayward and so was some of his passing.
Substitutes: Hadjam (Boscagli, 65), Wieffer (Chema, 65), Yalcouye (De Cuyper, 72), Hinshelwood (Kostoulas, 72), Georginio (Gomez, 84).
