Midhurst gas works begin as first phase of major road programme gets underway
Residents in Midhurst are being warned of a series of road closures and traffic restrictions as ‘essential’ gas main replacement works get underway across the town.
The first phase of the work is currently underway at Closewalk Wood, where contractors are carrying out the initial stage of a major programme expected to continue through to Friday, January 29.
SGN Contractors, I&G Contractors Limited, are undertaking the works as part of mandatory HSE gas main replacement work. The project is intended to help maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to homes and businesses and reduce the risk of gas leaks in the future.
The first phase began on Monday, September 7, and is expected to last around five weeks.

As the gas mains are located within the road, traffic management measures will be introduced as the project moves between different locations.
Following the work at Closewalk Wood, the programme will move to Chichester Road and Taylors Field Footpath from September 21 for approximately eight weeks.
A road closure will be introduced from the junction of Chichester Road with Selham Road to the junction with New Road. The closure will be carried out in two stages, with access arrangements changing as the works progress.
The third phase is due to begin on October 5, when contractors move onto Selham Road for around nine weeks. A rolling road closure will operate between the junctions with Chichester Road and High Standing Lane.
From October 26, work will take place on Highstanding Lane, a private road, for approximately six weeks, again using a rolling road closure.
The final phase is scheduled to begin on November 16 on Church Road, between the junction with Selham Road and beyond Pinewood Court. This phase is expected to last around nine weeks.
The road closures will mean that there will be no through vehicle access past the closure in either direction, with signed diversion routes provided.
Access to properties within the affected areas will, however, be maintained, with residents being informed of local arrangements where necessary.
Pedestrian and cycle access will remain available through the closure areas.
SGN says normal bin collection arrangements should continue unless residents are advised otherwise by their service provider.
Bus passengers are also being advised to check with their individual service provider, as routes may be affected by the works.
A spokesperson for SGN said: “We appreciate that these works may cause disruption to residents and businesses. Please be assured that our engineers will be working as quickly and safely as possible to complete the works.
“If you have any questions regarding these works, please contact our Customer Service Team at [email protected] or call 0800 912 1700.
