Part of West Sussex A-road closed amid fuel spillage
A fuel spillage, from a broken-down heavy goods vehicle, caused the partial closure of the A23 in Mid Sussex.
The closure had been in place – between the A2300 at Hickstead and the A273 at Pyecombe – while emergency resurfacing works were completed.
National Highways said attempts were made to clean, and treat, the fuel spillage but it was subsequently determined that ‘full resurfacing of the affected carriageway was required’.
Emergency resurfacing works were carried out overnight, with the road remaining closed on Saturday morning (September 5). while the work was completed.
In its latest update, at around 9.40am, National Highways reported: “All lanes are now open. Currently there are no significant delays on the approach.”
A diversion had been in operation, with drivers told to follow the hollow-circle diversion signs.
Drivers travelling from further afield towards the south coast were advised to consider an alternative route via the M23, A264, A24 and A283, joining the A27 eastbound towards Brighton before re-joining the A23 at Patcham.
National Highways advised motorists affected by the closure to allow extra journey time, plan ahead and consider rerouting or delaying their journey.
