Peacehaven and Telscombe coastal road repairs postponed: decision was not taken lightly, says East Sussex Highways

East Sussex Highways has confirmed that repairs to a coastal road in Peacehaven have been postponed.

Work on the A259 South Coast Road had previously been scheduled for May 5-10 with plans to close the road from 8pm to 5am.

The announcement about the delay appeared on live.eastsussexhighways.com on Thursday, April 9.

East Sussex Highways said: “We’ve recently reviewed our highways programme to make sure funding is focused where it can deliver the greatest safety benefit. As part of this review, the planned carriageway repairs on South Coast Road have been postponed.

“We know this will be disappointing, and we want to reassure residents that this decision wasn’t taken lightly. Safety remains our priority, and the road will continue to be checked through our regular inspections. Any safety‑related issues we identify will be dealt with, and the site will stay under review for future programmes.

“If you notice any problems on the road, please report them to us – it really helps us respond quickly and keep the network safe for everyone.”

East Sussex Highways said Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council (ESCC) to manage the highways service across East Sussex. East Sussex Highways said they also plan to carry out carriageway repairs on Marine Drive in Peacehaven.

The plan for South Coast Road was for ‘targeted carriageway patching, ironwork adjustments, road joint repairs and high friction surfacing (HFS)’ with the aim of improving the overall condition of the highway. The work would have taken place between the junction of Telscombe Cliffs Way and the Telscombe Tye car park. But, due to the central reservation and the need for a safe turning point, the closure had been extended to Longridge Avenue.
