Southern Rail: Level crossing fault causes delays in East Sussex

Train passengers faced delays, after a fault with level crossing barriers near Polegate.

Southern Rail reported the problem at 7.25am – on Wednesday, October 21 – affecting services between Eastbourne and Lewes. The operator confirmed at 8am that the disruption had ended.

During the incident, trains were able to continue running but had to stop before approaching the crossing so drivers could receive verbal instructions from the signaller.

Southern said: “They will travel at slower speeds so that they can see anything which may be obstructing them.”

Passengers were advised to use their normal routes but allow an extra 15 minutes to reach their destinations.

The operator said Network Rail was investigating the fault so the barriers could be fixed and trains could return to normal speeds.

In its 8am update, Southern said: “Disruption caused by this incident has now ended.

“No further trains should be affected by this issue, but please continue to check journey planners when travelling.”

This incident followed a ‘fault with the signalling system’ between Lewes and Eastbourne, on Tuesday evening.

Southern reported on social media, at 5.30pm, that trains running towards Eastbourne were ‘facing delays and trains may run at slower speeds than usual’.

The operator added: “If you are on a train that has come to a stop outside of a station, remain on board and await further information.

“We know where you are and we are working on getting you back on the move as soon as possible.

"Trains are still able to run through the area but are facing delays of up to 10 minutes.

“If you are travelling now, your journey will be delayed.”

As of 6pm, services were ‘returning to schedule’.

Southern added: “Some minor delays may still impact your journey so please continue to check station information boards or journey planners for live information.”
