Bognor had 470 claimants (20.3 per cent down from last year) with 105 of them in the 18-24 age range (19 per cent down).

Karen Brooks is the relationship manager at the West Sussex Department for Work and Pensions. She said: “Unemployment has fallen to the lowest level since 2008, and long-term unemployment has dropped by a staggering quarter over the last year.

“The south east has one of the lowest unemployment rates of any UK region, at 4.1 per cent. In Chichester, there are 210 fewer claimants than a year ago, and Bognor Regis has 120 fewer claimants.”

Also welcoming the figures was Bognor MP Nick Gibb.

He added: “It is vital local businesses and organisations continue to grow and create new jobs and I will do all I can to support them so that unemployment continues to fall throughout the constituency.”
