FASTER SOON: No sooner had I reported last week that the temporary traffic lights associated with work being done for the village to received faster broadband were still in place, than they disappeared. Nothing to do with me waving a magic wand, just that the roadworks had been completed. Next stage involved two cheerful engineers working down holes making mysterious connections. Now we wait with bated breath for the final connection and that will happen in six to eight weeks time, I understand.

ARTS ABROAD: Living in a rural area doesn’t mean we’re divorced from the best of the arts productions enjoyed by our city-dweller friends. These days a visit to our local cinema can put us in touch with new plays, opera, ballet and exhibitions at a fraction of the price of a visit to London, Glyndebourne, or the Met. Last weekend I saw Glyndebourne’s brilliant production of Wagner’s Meistersingers of Nuremburg at Uckfield Cinema and in the interval enjoyed a two course meal at the cinema’s restaurant. The production was fantastic, the meal was excellent and the whole experience was something to be savoured. If you haven’t tried the streaming experience, don’t delay because Uckfield has a full programme of events coming up and you need to book early.

PUBS TOO: And now I read that Applause Rural Touring (does what it says in its title) has been awarded a grant from Arts Council England to develop a new and exciting project called Inn Crowd. The idea is that pubs will host high quality live literature events. The project intends to help re-establish pubs as central to rural community life by bringing these productions to new audiences. Waldron has a good record of producing its own plays and film with the pub playing a central role, and we’re used to hosting the Rude Mechanicals in the field behind the pub every summer. A couple of months ago our pub hosted a magical reading of TS Eliot’s poetry in the back room, which was well-attended. So bring it on, we’re ready.

STRING THEORY: The next visit from the group String Theory will be on Sunday July 31 at the Star at lunchtime.

CROQUET INTERNATIONAL: This weekend there will be a visit by our French friends from Catenay to play our annual croquet match. Play will take place on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, everyone welcome to come and watch.

SERVICES: This Sunday both morning services will be at St Bartholomew’s at 8am for Holy Communion and at 10am for Parish Eucharist. A reminder for your diary that our annual parish Lammas Service at Heronsdale Manor barn will be on Sunday August 7 at 10am when our preacher will be the Dean of Chichester Cathedral, the Very Reverend Stephen Waine.
