Water company Southern is carrying out a range of flood-related work as well as its normal day-to-day activities, as groundwater levels across the area start to recede

But, as Geoff Loader, Southern Water’s director of communications, explained, there are those who may seek to take advantage of this situation.

He said: “Our teams have been out in force to help reduce the risk of flooding in communities across the region during what has been the wettest winter on record. However, now the sun has come out, so too do unscrupulous people who impersonate Southern Water staff in order to deceive and steal.”

Southern Water is urging people to attach their door chain when answering doors.

Legitimate staff for the company will always carry and identification card.

Company uniforms and vehicle logos are points to watch for.

“If you are in any doubt when someone calls at your home you should ask for their identification card. If in doubt, keep them out and telephone Southern Water on 0845 278 0845 to confirm their identity,” added Mr Loader. “Southern Water staff, as well as contractors working for the company, are aware of this procedure and are happy to wait while customers check their identification.”
